History & Tradition

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCGAUX) Flotilla 23-1 (Flotilla-16 prior to January 2009 Restructuring) is based in historic Annapolis, Maryland (founded in 1649), the state capital and home of the U.S. Naval Academy.  The existence of Flotilla 23-1 dates back to at least 1939 when the USCGAUX was known as the Coast Guard Reserve.  During World War II, the Flotilla had thirteen members who conducted patrols and supported USCG special missions such as extinguishing jetty and wharf aids to navigation lights during air raids and blackouts.  Although the Flotilla had thirteen boats willing to serve, due to gasoline rationing typically only two vessels were deployed at a time.

Today, the Flotilla has over 45 members who volunteer their time, talents, vessels and radio facilities to aid the USCG, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDDNR) helping keep our waterways safe and secure, controlling pollution, preserving the environment, protecting maritime assets and serving the boating public.

Members typically conduct over 50 safety, regatta, and special event (Blue Angles, Bay Swim, Tug of War, July 4th Fireworks, Naval Academy Events, etc.) patrols each boating season, stand radio watches at Coast Guard Station Annapolis throughout the year, regularly teach boating courses, perform vessel safety checks, assist the community with marine events, directly support Station Annapolis and Sector Baltimore with critical projects and missions and have adopted Annapolis Harbor as well as Magothy and Severn Rivers as part of NOAA’s Chart Update Program.

We firmly believe that working relationships built on personal friendships are key to successfully carrying out our missions as part of "Team Coast Guard."  Thus, fellowship activities are an important part of our activities and include annual potluck barbeques and picnics, an occasional evening cruise and more formal activities such as Change of Watch ceremonies to install new officers and celebrate the contributions of members throughout the year.

Today the Auxiliary plays a larger role than at any other time in history.  Members help enhance the safety and security of our waterways, ports and marine assets by conducting on-the-water Patrols and Marine Dealer Visits, performing Vessel Safety Checks,  assisting with vessel and container inspections, serving as foreign language Interpreters, teaching boating courses, acting as Watchstanders and supporting all other USCG non Law Enforcement missions.
